There is no way to automate this function since it's not a function of the
registry.

Rather, anything we put into place would be a hack, and being a hack would
be ugly, and being ugly would cause more problems (and confusion) than it
would solve.

Saying that, there *may* be something, but a better avenue would be simply
handling the customer's expectation on what can and can not be done with
domain names.  You can NOT pay 8 months and get 8 months extended on the
domain.  Period :)
