If you are so stuck on making them happy why don't you do this then, since NOTHING can be done at the registry level...
Take the domain that registers the soonest, ask your customer for the $$ for all his domains and you keep it in an account, you then manage his domains for him. Meaning when it is time to renew then you dip into the funds that he gave you to renew then and do that for him. Or better yet set them to auto renew and ding his cc each time. That way he isn't being bothered by emails or having to worry that he may miss a renewal date and a domain slipped into expiry.
