Since
it's only ever 2 years, the domain has either expired or it hasn't (within the
multiples of two years).
Nominet does not allow for an explicit renewal (you can't add a two year
term somewhere within the registration's lifespan) - it auto-renews on the
expiry date, for another two years. (period)
Rather
painful to work business logic around that, but we're trying
;)

Indeed.
Personally I am delighted that expiry dates are
now going to be published, this was our biggest gripe with Nominet and
causes us endless grief with transferring in detagged or renewal
due domains. Previously all we could
do without sending an email in to Nominet for every single domain requesting
the expiry date was to guess the expiry by adding multiples of 2 years to the
registration date - hideously unreliable.

Subject: RE: .UK Whois expanding - finally
Of
course, a test output for Nominet members wont be available until September
1st ...
There's been mutterings of this for months, I - for one - am glad it's
finally happening :)

On 1
October 2002 Nominet is finally expanding WHOIS for .UK
domains.
New details
will include the Registrant name, the address details for registrants that
have been classified as businesses, the date on which the domain name is due
for renewal, and the name and URL of the Tag Holder. The second phase
will include address details for non-trading individuals (there will be an
opt out option for individuals) so apart from those who have opted out, the
address details on the expanded whois will be fully populated by December
2004.
Kind regards,
