The real world?  I don't know if one can make that claim with microsoft
... but ... I completely understand where your coming from.  I was faced
with the same delima a year ago.  But I was able to list all the files I
relied on in the windoz environment and was able to find unix xwindows
programs which pretty well did everything microsoft does.

If you have an extra computer to fiddle around with and introduce
yourself to the xwindows system - I strongly recommend it.
