This is a byproduct of the screwy rules that the registry uses. If a domain is transferred within 45 days of a renewal, then the renewal year is removed (and refunded to the original registrar) and a year is added back for the transfer.
Good luck getting your money back for the lost year from Network Solutions (but trust me, they got their money from the Registry). I've gotten in the habit of advising customers who renewed an expired domain at NetSol to mark their calendar and not try to transfer it for at least 60 days.
