Even more helpful would be a combination Whois/Domain
availability check (given that Whois is not a reliable indicator
of domain availability).
Yes, that combo would even be better.  I don't see any reason the 
current quickstart gui
could remain as is for those who do not need to check, and then have 
another gateway
that gives whois results and actual availability results.

BTW, nearly all other registeration systems have you enter the
domain to be registered first, checks availability, and only then
prompts you for the full registeration details. IMHO this is a
better work-flow.
