My understanding was that ttl's were universally 5 minutes.  I suppose to
minimize caching/propogation problems and lessen the need for anyone to worry
about dropping ttl's prior to making changes.  It's probably the easiest way
to deal with potential problems.

What other data can't be managed?  Can you change the contact email address
in the SOA?
