Hello
I renewed my only .co.uk domain today, and noticed in the OpenSRS confirmation:
"Please note that due to the renewal process at the .UK registry, the whois information for renewed UK domains will remain unchanged until 6-8 weeks after the old term expires."
Is this for real?
Yes, and for every day of that six to 8 weeks you will get pesky emails from your customer claiming
you have not renewed their domain name.
How would a registrant be able to confirm independently that a renewal was even submitted,
It should say being processed in the whois.
The root of this problem is that Nominet provides credit to tag holders.
The .com registry works like OpenSRS where registrars have to have a balance
on account, so if a domain is renewed there is no possibility of the registrar
not paying for it.
In .uk we can wait a month or more to get the invoice and then it takes a couple
of weeks for Nominet to get the money and for it to show as paid in their
accounting system.
Until it is in this state they are not willing to say "renewed".
However, there are other models. Centralnic renew a domain as soon as the renew command is sent. They then send out an invoice to us. If we do not pay the invoice they roll the date back to the original expiry.
This raises a number of problems with Nominet.
I stood for election to the policy advisory board last year.
I did not get elected but its pretty much a waste of time anyway as
it gets bogged down in arguments about things like .net.uk when the fundamental problems
never get addressed.
The big one is them sending out renewal notices in the post and registrants paying them #80 plus VAT.
Don't start me, I will have a coronary.
