important to me, I find reading the printed version to be easier than on

computer. FYI, I hate laptops. :-
This is a bit off topic, but I just had to comment. I used to not like
laptops either, for two reasons, first I have been a system builder from
the days of the 286 on. I didn't like laptops because I couldn't build
them, to me they represented a lost business opportunity. Also I
couldn't repair them much of the time because replacement motherboards
and certain other parts were generally not available. The second and
more important reason, because it would matter to anyone, was because
they were a poor alternative to a powerful desktop computer. Besides
they were very expensive.
The first problem remains, small scale system builders can't build
laptops, and they remain difficult to repair or upgrade. You can add
more RAM memory if there isn't enough, and you can often install hard
drives with more storage capacity, but that is about it. I should
mention that you can add external enhancements, like bigger displays,
keyboards, mice, or decent speakers.
The second thing has changed however. I now have a laptop myself. I
went looking for one to use with Writer so that I could do my writing
other than in an uncomfortable office chair. What absolutely shocked me
was when I went to buy a cheap machine that would be a second or extra
computer. For $400., what I got was a machine with a dual 64 bit
processor running at 2 GHz, 3 Gigabytes of RAM, and a 320 Gig hard drive
that was twice as much machine as my "main" computer. I went for a
model with a 15.6 Inch display, (that size display allows enough room
for a full size keyboard) that is something that a touch typist like
myself would insist on, and a copy of Windows 7. (I like Win 7 as much
as I despised Vista) It came with a 30 day trial version of MS Office,
which I deleted after satisfying myself that I still liked Writer
better. The speakers were as bad as laptop speakers have always been,
so I plugged in my favorite computer speakers with bass and treble tone
controls and rubber surround woofers. I also added a wireless USB
mouse. and I made a wooden support tray that keeps the vents
unobstructed so that the machine is properly cooled, and keeps my lap
cool as well. Set up this way, I like my laptop as much as it is
possible to like an inanimate object.
I now know why most businesses are purchasing "desktop replacement"
class laptops for all their executive offices. There is no longer
anything that the vast majority of tower systems are used for that can't
be done with this type of laptop. A machine like this is even adequate
for high level software development work. It is even great for watching
movies on DVD.
