They're worlds apart.  Almost every profession in the world has a
standard of works being financed through either "pay for creation" or
"pay for use after creation", with subtle differences re: whether
stipends / salaries / retainers or contracts on the one hand, or case
by case licensing fees or 'royalties' on the other, are used.

Very few professions have had a standard of "optional payment for
appreciation after creation"; infrastructure to support
whuffie-at-a-distance is almost wholly unknown before the Internets.
