I think bitcoin is extremely awesome but oipen source hardware is even moreso.
In my opinion, the three great innovations in open hardware as of late are The GVCS - http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/marcin_jakubowski.html and openfarmtech.org Arduino - http://arduino.org/ Reprap - http://www.reprap.org/wiki/Main_Page I'd also reach out to the coworking and hackerspace communities.
