As long as cool things from Sitepoint are topics of discussion, I
think the Catfish footer-popup  is pretty interesting, it could
probably be done in jQuery as well:

It's kind of annoying as an add, but I could imagine an interesting
popup "console" type thing. IIRC, there is some pretty hairy CSS in
that article.
