@Matt: Thanks! I can't take credit for the idea. I merely ported the Taconite idea to jQuery.
@Dan: You're quite right regarding relative payload sizes. JSON will almost certainly be smaller in every case - and that's a good point to consider. The trade off is in complexity of the code that needs to manage that data. For those using templating languages on the server, generating markup is a no-brainer - that's what templates do. And the big bonus with the lasted version of this plugin is that zero client-side code is necessary to process the returned data (the plugin does everything). To be clear, I'm not against JSON.
