Dear all,

We are excited to announce the first release of the _long-awaited Data
Carpentry Geospatial lessons_ <https://datacarpentry.org/geospatial-workshop/>.
As with all newly developed curricula, this lesson is still in ‘beta’. This
means we are actively organizing pilot workshops and collecting feedback. The
lesson Maintainers and Carpentries staff will continue to update and improve
the lesson based on feedback from Instructors and learners.

This R-based workshop:

·        introduces project organisation and management for spatial data

·        covers common data structures and storage and transfer formats

·        teaches the creation of summary statistics and publication-quality
graphics

·        helps users work with and plot vector and raster format spatial data
in R.

Find more information on _the workshop homepage_
<https://datacarpentry.org/geospatial-workshop/>.

For this first release, we are looking for Instructors who want to teach it –
we will onboard you to help you get started – and institutions who would like
to pilot a workshop for their researchers.

Sign up for an onboarding session on _this Etherpad_
<https://pad.carpentries.org/geospatial-onboarding>. If you want to pilot a
geospatial workshop at your institution, you can _request a workshop here_
<https://amy.software-carpentry.org/forms/dc/request/>.

You can also self-organise a geospatial workshop. Use _our checklists_
<https://docs.carpentries.org/topic_folders/hosts_instructors/index.html> to
help you plan and organise it.

The new lessons were developed by the Carpentry community. A big thanks to the
National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) for hosting the 2016 hackathon
that kickstarted these lessons, and thanks to the many contributors along the
way who have got the lessons ready for teaching broadly. Read the blog post
<https://datacarpentry.org/blog/2018/08/geospatial-launch> for more details.

Best,

Erin
