Hi Dav,

I'd disagree, and +1 to Erin to say that it sounds like a East-Southeast
Asia list would be really helpful. Having such a list is actually immensely
beneficial to community building, even if it initially is 3-6-10 people,
just because you have to start somewhere! With the discuss list, in and of
itself it has a heap of traffic about all sorts of things up for
discussion, which means that people may be hesitant to post region-relevant
things/discussion/jobs/chatter as much as they would to a "local" list. I
say this as someone in Australia, where the Au/NZ list is IMMENSELY useful
as a place to shoot a random email about something relevant to people in
the region (looking for helpers/instructors/jobs/region-specific discussion
of recognition of researchers who code/random tangental workshops/cool
people visiting [this is a real summary of messages from the last ~3
months], but not quite of interest to the broader community - and because
it reaches many fewer people, most of whom you know (or are 1-2 degrees of
separation from) it's a LOT less daunting, especially for newbie
instructors/members of the community (and not so newbie ones as well). It
doesn't mean you don't use discuss, it just means you have a local, smaller
list, on whom you may end up knowing most of the people, and hence finding
it easier to chatter, which can lead to really cool new outcomes for the
region. I would totally encourage you to have such a list!!!

In terms of geography, I would suggest using the Wikipedia maps of East and
South East Asia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Asia and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southeast_Asia), perhaps because that may be
a geographically feasible area to travel for instructors/helpers (also:
Wikipedia :) )? As with all Carpentry lists, it's not that people outside
the region can't join the list, it's just that it's a personal opt-in, when
they realise that information relevant to the region is relevant to them.

Once SWC/DC ramps up in India, I'd think there would be a scope for a
separate South Asia list? (Or there might be one already?). With regards to
Russia, I haven't seen much interest in the Carpentries there (although
I've toyed with the idea of running a workshop when I go back on holiday;
off-topic:any other Russian-speaking instructors interested?) - but it
would definitely be a branch-off from the European Carpentries, just
because most of the academic institutions are clustered toward the West and
Centre of the country (i.e. closer/easier to travel to from Europe, not
Asia) - although I'm sure a small number of people from Vladivostok would
join the East Asia list (not sure about Novosibirsk).

In summary, I'd really encourage you to consider a local list - they really
are cool and useful,
Kind regards,
Darya
