Dear Colleagues,

I hope this finds you well. We are in the process of shifting a 7-week research
internship program for 50 high school students from the laboratory to the
Internet. As the 50 faculty mentors are meting out bioinformatics and other
data science projects of vastly different calibers, I need to develop a tool to
assess students' preparedness and capabilities. Can you point me to resources
that might help me accomplish this?

As much as possible, this survey should not only assess skills like familiarity
with software (Excel - Beginner/Intermediate/Expert) and technological
provisions (access to the Internet via Wifi vs. Ethernet). Rather, I would
prefer to include questions that would provide information about the level of
mastery of skills (opening Excel vs mastering pivot tables and macros). The
same for the hardware (as in how long does it take with your specific set-up to
download and/or to process certain files of certain complexities/sizes.

In the best of all worlds, we would provide laptops that have been pre-equipped
accordingly, with the appropriate type of conncetivity, and with an ISP that we
know can handle the necessary loads. But, alas, we don't have the funds for
that. Instead, we need to find out what the students can do with the
technology, connectivity and ISPs they do have access to, to provide targeted
support to bridge the gaps where necessary. I'd be grateful for any pointers
you might have...

Thank you.
Uwe
