Tom, Several of the stand-alone workshops we've done at Stanford have revolved around visualization in ggplot2, and touched on other topics in the tidyverse. Some of that material is linked below, if you'd like to explore it. I think the great benefit of ggplot2 is that it was established earlier than the larger tidyverse, and so more people are comfortable using it in general than some other packages in that platform.
