I've posted on this a couple of months back: IMHO the main benefit of SUNWdhcp*
is in its CLI and to an extent GUI management interfaces, which allow to
configure it on the fly with a programmatic API, such as used when configuring
SunRay software (by its wizards), or with snippets I've posted on the wiki (to
provision local zones with DHCP settings). I am not aware whether ISC dhcpd has
(nor doesn't have) equivalent interfaces.

Otherwise, even though there are reports of successful use of SunRays with
illumos-based OSes, that technology (at least in its mature years) did not
require anything magical and proprietary on the networking infrastructure side,
so even Windows DHCP servers could be used, not to speak of ISC and its
derivatives. They are just not conveniently integrated and may be somewhat less
documented as to the steps needed for setup. Though for the most common
purposes, a mixed setup with some basic info from DHCP, then some pointers in
the default DNS zone searched by the terminal after bootup and DHCP or static
net config, and finally downloadable config files or server logic for
uber-customization, there's reallly little needed of DHCP in this area at all.

While I'd lazily love to continue using SUNWdhcp, especially thanks to its easy
configurability, and it is really curious why it broke down in recent illumoses
(may be a symptom of some sinister regression not really related to dhcp per
se?), I'd reluctantly agree to see it torched if that simplifies things for
illumos core development.

Aside from that, a pntadm/etc. remake for ISC might solve most end-user
inconveniences (i.e. allow to still use SRSS fully).
