I do this regularly.  I am completely unconvinced that it makes any
difference whatsoever, as the same mails from the same lists - lists I
have already added filters for so Google know that I have a specific
interest in that content - keep going into [GMail]/Spam.

It'd be really interesting to know why Google weighs so heavily
against a user's explicit preferences and actions.
