My 2c is that if you wish to continue to use UFS in the absence of ZFS on
more than one disk you need a volume manager so you need md or if you just
need a volume manager you need md. There are several corner cases where this
is possible, the that first spring to mind are:

- cluster

- samfs/qfs

- porting from existing md based systems (illumos ease of adoption).

- memory constrained platforms. To quote from the freeBSD ZFS page "
"To use ZFS, at least *1GB* of memory is recommended (for all architectures)
but more is helpful as ZFS needs *lots* of memory. Depending on your
workload, it may be possible to use ZFS on systems with less memory, but it
requires careful tuning to avoid panics from memory exhaustion in the
kernel. "
