One very common scenario was/is RAID volumes provided by a SAN from various underlying parity groups - a stripe only over these was/is very common to see. Also, one of the common use cases for a concatenation - as opposed to a stripe - was multiple LUNs being provided from the same parity group.

Sites still hammering their big array investment from 10 years ago is common. That brand new Illumos host might just be getting some storage from such an old array.
