After discussing things with a few of the parties involved, my personal opinion is that: 1. As Nexenta are basing their commercial product on 'iCore', thus breaking compatibility with NCP, NCP community members might be better served by transitioning to StormOS. Andy might want to confirm this but he mentioned it may be possible to adapt StormOS to allow an apt-get update from NCP3. 2. Since Nexenta will need/want a development platform, I'd suggest they release "Nexenta Development Edition" as their "community distro", rather than create any kind of illumos-sanctioned reference distribution, especially since something based on the OI packages with dpkg is a bit of a mule distro that current NCP users probably aren't too interested in. "Development Edition" is a very clear name, so customers won't be confused. It'll also be good for Nexenta's open source creds - "our development edition is open source!!!11". It can be a member of the illumos project, in the way that OI is. I view the two points above as pleasing everyone: 1. Nexenta - they get both an OI based core userland combined with dpkg to use for their commercial product. They don't have to worry about NCP any more. They get a development distro. 2. NCP3 users - they get an upgrade path to a very Debian-oriented Illumos distro. 3. OpenIndiana - we get to collaborate with Nexenta, without a competing distribution being produced as the output. I think this delivers a big win-win to everyone involved. Comments appreciated.
