Hi,

does somebody see benefit in keeping these libs in Illumos:

libresolv.so.1 - ABI incompatible with libresolv.so.2, I think it has
been obsoleted from 1997 or something like that. Removal breaks 15 years
old binaries but it can be easily added manually if necessary.

I do have binaries on my SPARC machine built in 1993 which are still in use. There are three binaries which depend on libresolv.so.1 (which is 49 kilobytes in size). It seems wrong to abandon old binaries that still work. One of the joys of Solaris is that old programs kept on working.

libldap.so.4 - predates LDAPSSL work, last time relevant around 2001. It
was "replaced" by libldap.so.5 which is Solaris fork of iPlanet aliance
libldap. There are not many LDAP consumers so old and frequently you can
see 3rd party apps use own copies of libldap.

LDAP is likely a different story than something as low level and intrinsic as libresolv. Programs using an old LDAP interface may be rendered totally useless in the modern world.

There should be a formal policy decision on the ABI age that Illumos will support.
