Yes, KVM works on illumos, however support for using the OS as a KVM hypervisor
requires patches which have not been upstreamed yet. Joyent and OpenIndiana
have each got those patches in those distributions. Note that none of that is
required to run as a guest of KVM; that Just Works.

Can't say if anyone is doing this anymore… at one point there was support for
both domU and dom0. I think dom0 support was removed a long time ago. But
running under domU should still work. The last testing I knew of for it
personally was performed about 9 months ago. At that time more recent
versions required some fixes that had not been put in our tree -- I *think*
those changes got integrated, but I'm not sure.
