Right. Currently it is offered as a PCIe card to compete with GPU implementations. Given that Intel is also a chip vendor, there is no reason why Xeon Phi can not be more integrated (e.g. on motherboard) in the future. I don't see anything which prohibits it from serving the function of a general purpose CPU with peripherals.

It would be very interesting to be able to support Xeon Phi cards on an Illumos system and even more interesting if it was possible to boot and run something like SmartOS on the co-processor card so it behaves as an adjunct networked "host" device with 62 cores.
