Hi Adam, I completely agree with you. I'm a Unix/Linux admin for a good few years already and it's always good to have some level of interoperability across different platforms. I feel that nowadays we should at least be able to read some of the main native File Systems in any Unix/Linux OS. In our case here, I don't even need any NTFS permissions or anything fancy, but just be able to read the files.
I'll give the ntfs-3g a go, as I've mentioned in my other (looong) e-mail... but it would be good to have somebody assuring that it does work across illumos implementations. Exciting times, to be honest. I like to see that are many discussion about this issue. I'm sure it will be all positive in the end ;-) Cheers, Fabio ----- Ursprüngliche Nachricht ----- Von: Adam Holland Gesendet: 03.01.13 00:07 Uhr An: [email protected] Betreff: Re: [discuss] Re: Mount NTFS USB under OmniOS Sorry for not being clear. I meant to say that I have not tried any illumos-based distro yet, but the first one I will try is OpenIndiana (asap), and I wanted to get a heads-up on the procedure. Thanks Jim for the link, i like seeing familiar things like ntfs-3g which I use with Linux, even if it's not automatic (well I use the command line a lot, so I am no stranger to issuing the GNU "mount" command myself, but I never had to specify the filesystem type since the filesystem detection took care of it. As long as it does work, I'm fine with the command line method. So for Fabio's case, he is struggling with the fact that the ntfs-3g software is not as conveniently available with his distro OmniOS, compared to the OpenIindiana repository package, and that is why there have been two suggestions to use network protocols (rsync or NFS) instead of trying to get it to work. In my time with Linux, if I wanted to do this, I'd look for a precompiled binary with no package management -- pretending Openindiana used something like "RPM" packages, in which case I'd look for the generic ".tar.gz" binary for OmniOS... Based on my experience with Linux would require more configuration then a packaged version, but not nearly as painful as trying to compile it myself! Or, are these two illumos distros too different to run the same generic binary? Illumos is the kernel-side project (well, a bit more if you compare to a Linux kernel); so there are a number of illumos-based distros, and openindiana is one of them. The procedure is outlined here: http://wiki.openindiana.org/oi/Mounting+NTFS+volume+on+an+external+disk+drive I don't think I've succeeded in making a working automounter entry for ntfs-3g, but it does work from command line and via /etc/vfstab (might be not mounted-on-boot if you want to avoid the boot-time dependency). If anyone has hints on autofs+ntfs3g+fuse - please enlighten me ;) HTH and thanks, and a happy New Year, //Jim Klimov ------------------------------------------- illumos-discuss Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/182180/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/182180/23587090-93bb4910 Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?& https://www.listbox.com/member/?& Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com *illumos-discuss* | Archives https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/182180/=now https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/182180/23768422-bf5d5cb9 | Modify https://www.listbox.com/member/?& Your Subscription http://www.listbox.com --- Fabio Rodrigues [email protected] ------------------------------------------- illumos-discuss Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/182180/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/182180/21175430-2e6923be Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=21175430&id_secret=21175430-6a77cda4 Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
