Several benefits of ZFS include the fact that you don't need to use identical drives or slice them up to include a meta data partition a la Solaris Volume Manager. Your proposal sounds interesting but I'm curious why you'd spend so much time adjusting code when it doesn't sound necessary based on this snippet of config data you've shared.
