Looks like you made it quite a ways down the pipe with this:

Have you tried building with just the 2 patches that the one guy mentions?
 He's running on some variant of illumos and he's not seeing the hangs your
getting.

I may try building using his build scripts, but I'm already hung up on
xmlrpc-c not building properly:

gcc: error: unrecognized command line option '-Kpic'
