Oops, I hit Send instead of the format button. I meant to add that SMB2 in
OS X 10.9.2 seems to be working much better then in previous releases. My
main use is talking to a Samba 4.15 server running on FreeNAS 9.2.1.2. OS X
10.9.1 talking to FreeNAS 9.2.1 (the first release to include Samba 3) via
SMB was a lot slower than AFP to Netatalk. I haven't benchmarked it against
AFP/Netatalk, but with the latest SMB specific fixes in OS X 10.9.2 and
FreeNAS 9.2.1.2 SMB now seems more than good enough.

If you don't know this already, as of OS X 10.9 SMB2 is now Apple's default
networking protocol. Apple stumbled out of the blocks with the initial
release of SMB2, but I'm pretty sure those problems have been addressed in
the last couple of releases.
