Hope I got the citations right.

AS OP I'd like to summarize my use case... which may make some
difference as to best choice for me.

1) small time operation... home lan
2) Only 2-3 users might access over smb at once. Mostly it will be
   only me.
3) Running several different OS's on lan, win8 win7 linux (debian) and
openindiana. All may need access, but again usually one at a time.

Maybe RichardE can give some guidance on this: When you speak of
in-kernel (illumos) smb server... is that something different than
other mentions in this thread of 'Solaris cifs server/?

And (stemming from my confusion about what is 'oi' and what is
'illumos') is the in-kernel server to be found on oi build 151_a8.

I wonder if ChristopherC would mind further elucidating what kind of
scenarios smb/server might find itself short.

And maybe PeterC could be more specific about the zfs integration.
Which operations are integrated or the like... Or do you mean in so
far as connections and handshakes in either direction are smooth and
trouble free?
