We had a good crowd in Brussels for FOSDEM last weekend.
Huge thanks to everyone involved. Many contributed - special mentions
go
to Hans "ribs" Rosenfeld for organizing the table and and Olaf for
live-coding
a SPARC port.
But thanks go to everyone else - providing T-shirts, coffee,
stroopwafels,
stickers and other swag, paying for dinner, beer and the like. Just
turning up
and engaging in lively conversation.
It's good to see the process is iterative, first year I noticed the
booth and stuck around, second year I helped a bit, ... Lets keep this
up!
And thanks also to anyone who came by to say hi.
Interest was great, more and more people seem to come by and have a look
each year!
It's also always fun to chat with our (Free)BSD brethren! (Is that the
word I am looking for?)
Overall I think it went pretty well. Some extra thoughts:
The T-shirts were brilliant. It makes it obvious who we are, not only
at the
table but as we're in talks or visiting other tables.
I 100% agree! Last year the ones who had one wore a distro shirt, it was
great to all be somewhat in sync!
We ran out of English leaflets, and it needs to be refreshed anyway.
I felt my Tribblix minicards worked out well; the sticker books less
so. We
ought to have something for each of the distros.
I tried to be out front of the booth most of the time. It helps to have
people
out front - there's only really space for 2 or 3 people to get to the
table itself.
Standing helps you to be at the same level as visitors rather than
sitting; one
improvement would be for whoever is out front to have a stock of
leaflets or
stickers.
What makes good swag? More stickers, cards, postcards, leaflets. More
from the other distros (try and make each distro the same, though - as
in having the same *type* of swag, with maybe illumos having something
different). Badges? Pens probably make a very good item. Although maybe
not concentrate on swag too much - the place looked like a swarm of
locusts
had gone past mid-morning Saturday.
Some more materials from all distro's would be welcome, even some
leaflets that are distro specific would be great!
Might be nice to be in "uniform" at the Delirium event. That's pretty
noisy
though; I could hardly hear to make myself think.
We could try getting a talk into the BSD or distributions devrooms, or
a
lightning talk. These need planning well ahead of time, the deadlines
and
schedules tend to be fairly early. There are also a couple of rooms
available
for BoF sessions we could take advantage of.
We could probably reach out to the FreeBSD foundation and work with them
to get a few talks in, some stuff may be overlapping for both of us!
(ZFS, dtrace, ...)
Someone else mentioned the idea of having a proper monitor on the
table.
What to put on it though?
We had a few Nexenta sheets. Any other projects (openzfs) or vendors
(Delphix) we could get literature from to show how widely illumos is
used?
Any other feedback, comments, or suggestion for improvement are
appreciated.
And see you next year!
