By duplication I mean, we've just updated net-snmp to 5.7.3. OmniOS has done this several years ago (as well as pkgsrc). Each time this update was tested, dependent software rebuilt and so on. The same goes for other basic software packages. The only issue I see is the cost of communication vs the cost of duplicate work. (I mean that it can be not so easy to coordinate updates between distributions, especially when there's ABI breakages, like on net-snmp 5.4->5.7 update).
