All those things are still required in many places, not just for old
legacy, but actually new stuff.

My biggest gripe with X11 and the GUI
frameworks that sit on top are: the bloat, bad UI design and
inconsistent look and feel across different applications. It is one big
mess.

Sure. But that's not an issue of the underlying display server.
Feel free to come up with a new widget toolkit :)
