So what are you proposing? > Regards,A.S.----------------------Apostolos Syropoulos > Xanthi, Greece I'm not proposing anything. I was asked about the limitations of X11 and provided my opinions. I'm not involved in Xserver or Wayland development and don't really have a preference for either of those. I still run a lot of legacy hardware and use a multitude of operating systems: Solaris, Illumos, BSDs, Linux, Windows, etc. The open source community seems to be splitting into two camps: Linux camp advocating Wayland and everybody else still using Xserver and X11. The problem is, the likes of GTK and Gnome are deprecating X11 and will not support it in the near future. Others may follow as well. You can fork X11 as much as you like, but you still won't be able to use GTK applications in years to come. My personal preference would be for a group of people to start a commercial project to create a portable windowing system with modern features like HDR support, etc. Design something new and efficient with direct access to the graphics hardware. Reasonable licensing fees and a loyal user base can enable the project to thrive and have a viable business continuity. Then you don't need to look for anyone to step in and do some part time coding on the weekends. People can be paid to be full time developers, which in turn avoids stagnation and apathy that is common with many open source projects. I've been thinking of doing this myself, but I'm currently involved with various other projects and will be quite busy for the next few years. ------------------------------------------ illumos: illumos-discuss Permalink: https://illumos.topicbox.com/groups/discuss/T0d2b921a75184a64-M872bca995c8bc2f4ae82d04e Delivery options: https://illumos.topicbox.com/groups/discuss/subscription
