A friend of mine is an amateur pilot, here's what he had to say about Smart Deck
"Yeah, I've seen it before. But, as with all things aviation related, it's the insurance companies and the lawyers that really control technology. You see, the Smart Deck is NOT FAA certified, and would cost about 5 times as much as it does now to process and manage the certification paperwork So, as usual, new technologies that might actually help prevent people from flying into the side of mountains while flying through thick fog can only be used "unofficially" by VFR pilots, and only for non-commercial flights. " He agrees that it's better than all other flight computer options.. but in the end people can't even use it properly.
