Actually, my friend Sherie, the designer, did say that L3 has already
been through several levels of FAA certification, and Smart Deck will be
fully certified in January.

This version of the thing was designed for small, fast (expensive)
planes - (it currently flies on a Cirrus SR22). They'd have to do
different user research and designs for larger, commercial planes - just
like any system design has to change for scale, scope and core persona
changes.

Though I do suppose that some industries change more slowly than others
- which is probably a good thing.

on the web

A friend of mine is an amateur pilot, here's what he had to say about
Smart Deck

"Yeah, I've seen it before.
But, as with all things aviation related, it's the insurance companies
and the lawyers that really control technology.

You see, the Smart Deck is NOT FAA certified, and would cost about 5
times as much as it does now to process and manage the certification
paperwork

So, as usual, new technologies that might actually help prevent people
from flying into the side of mountains while flying through thick fog
can only be used "unofficially" by VFR pilots, and only for
non-commercial flights. "

He agrees that it's better than all other flight computer options..
but in the end people can't even use it properly.
