Jack: "There were faculty members on the committee from other visual arts disciplines, and they expect a thesis project to result in a finished work of art."
Without knowing the members it would seem that this is a misunderstanding in the normal process of design and implementation. The produced 'work of art' should be an interactive prototype with dummy data backed up with research. Its possibly worth taking the time to explain the normal deliverables of designers in the industry, and the consequences of requesting what they perceive to be the -working- piece of art. Maybe a brief overview of an implemented website stack should be part of her thesis? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
