Charlie,

Thanks for sharing this thoughtful rumination on the essence of IxD. I agree
with much of it, and have a few comments:

1) I would have to side with Jim Leftwich in that I don't believe IxD is
necessarily about digital products, although that is certainly where a large
portion of the work to be had is at the moment. I think IxD is can address
issues bordering on architectural, industrial, and communication design,
really as more of a perspective that takes human behaviors sharply into
account.

2) I think that at its core, IxD is different from traditional design
disciplines because it is centrally focused on the design of behavior;
specifically, matching human behaviors with appropriate behaviors of
artifacts, environments, and systems. I think this definition (drawn out in
greater detail on the IxDA website) is more useful and clear than more
circular definitions of "interactivity".

3) I see the differences between UCD and ACD as being largely a semantic
game of interest primarily to academics looking stake out intellectual turf
and gurus touting the methodology du jour. Anyone on the ground actually
practicing IxD realizes that personas, activities, scenarios, and tasks form
a progression of detail as one studies users, defines frameworks, and
executes final design solutions. I'd agree with you that design of
human-facing artifacts and behaviors is by definition human-centered.

Looking forward to meeting you at the conference!

Robert.
