Hi Paul - I can tell you that the medical information technology industry is just catching on to Interaction Design as discipline. Here at Misys we currently have a couple of Interaction Designers as well as myself (Human Factors/Manager), but we are looking to hire in both Great Britain and here in the states. As far as requirements, I can tell you what we are looking for:
1) either a strong design background or a strong HCI background with some design skills. I think that this creative skills bias is what differentiates IxD from the other HCI-related disciplines. 2) Some software design experience, especially with enterprise software. 3) A bit of a weird sense of humor - the enterprise software development world can be a little physical, so we are looking for people that are already a little bent :) Notice that we are not necessarily looking for clinical experience, but I can say we would leap at an interaction designer that had a medical informatics background. Good luck in your training and keep driving forward.
