Paul- I think the only challenge you might have is in finding an IxD position that will pay enough. There are lots of opportunities for people with domain expertise to enter the IxD field; there are plenty more jobs than there are talented and passionate people to fill them. You might have to do some other kind of work in addition to IxD to justify your salary; something like medical editing comes to mind...but once you've got a little background in IxD, your knowledge of the client's business, and more specifically of how the products are used, will be invaluable not only to your work but to the work of all your collaborators.
