Judging by every work place I've been in over the last twenty years I  
would say the answer to "how people actually use these things?" is -  
they don't :-)

For example at the current $work we have bits of blue-tac covering  
the little red flashing light that's probably telling us something  
terribly important - but none of us techie or otherwise can figure  
out _what_ exactly. Ignoring it doesn't seem to hurt though...
