Last fall we did some testing for a client that was a large video/ 
entertainment site. What we found is that the preference when  
accessing from work was click to play. This way, they had a chance to  
turn down their speakers first before their boss found out they were  
watching video on the job. For those who preferred instant play, they  
still preferred some delay (buffer) time before the video began,  
around 7-10 seconds or so. Again, this gave them a chance to see the  
rest of the screen before playing the video.

It's important to note that these were models for video embedded in  
the context of a page w/other content.

When testing another site that had a stand alone video player, they  
preferred instant play, but this was only when a separate video player  
was launched.
