I've sent this out before, but as a refresher, here's my biased
summary of the CMU School of Design approach:

    :-) Enjoy!

Re: HCI and IxD as degree programs...What confuses many (that I've met
anyway) is that there is the HCII (Human-Computer Interaction
Institute) within the School of Computer Science at CMU, which offers
a 1 yr master’s degree in HCI, with significant research methods
training and project work. I would NOT call it a design degree per se,
however. Really It’s a hybrid degree blending social science,
cognitive psychology, and computer science. The HCI degree is a
valuable one focused on computational perspectives, diverse research-
driven methods of user-centered design (UCD) process, including (but
not limited to) usability assessment and user-oriented problem
discovery, with heavy emphasis on cog psych and comp sci with
statistical and usability eval techniques, plus capturing data (user
feedback) towards making IxD recs.

Conversely, the School of Design is focused on design as a
“humanistic, liberal art of technological culture” focused on the
“conception, planning, and shaping of the artificial” directed towards
“individual and collective purposes”. Alot of third and fourth order
design issues and perspectives, blending visual, information design
and interface design solutions...increasingly service and policy
design too.

Here's a blurb for the grad design seminar:

Unfortunately I can't seem to find Dick Buchanan's syllabus online.
Anyone have a link or a PDF copy of it? That document in itself is
quite profound, or very enigmatic to newcomers :-)
