Let me clarify two things real quick:

With AIR you can use the browser as both a deployment and access  
point for the desktop client version of the product, if you are so  
inclined to do so as  a user. It's confusing to most people what an  
AIR "app" is when they do this, however. The real issue is one of how  
people like to access their tools, applications and stuff on their  
computer, I think.  With AIR apps, you kind of get the best all of  
the various methods from an end user point of view, which in my  
opinion actually winds up confusing the issue of what an RIA is  
rather than providing more clarity.

I forgot to complete my thought...

I meant to end it with: "you get a lot of control in return over the  
entire interface at every level."
