I would disagree that the color picker is an example of the kind of split button being described. I think the defining characteristic of a split button is demonstrated in this re-creation of a desktop email app toolbar: http://blog.davglass.com/files/yui/button1/ The button has a default action, but the drop-down offers variations on that default action.
