Conduct a braindrawing exercise where you present the function as you
do below and ask a group of people to sketch very rough concepts
quickly.  After a few minutes of sketching, people hand their sketches
to the person beside them in a meeting and that person reviews the
sketch and then adds new ones or variations on the old ones.  Do 3-5
rounds of this and then have a session where you extact good ideas or
good icons.

I've written a chapter on this and have done this many times for icons
and even ideas for home pages for Web sites.  The method is  form of
visual brainstorming and quite powerful.  It is sometimes used to
expose requirements.  You need to reassure people strongly that
artistic talent is not required.

Send me a  note offline and I"ll provide a few more details for you if
this sounds interesting.  It is also used as a tool to teach
creavitity in children.  If you google the method, you'll find some
useful stuff, though it is hard to find a thorough discussion of the
method.
