Rob Conduct a braindrawing exercise where you present the function as you do below and ask a group of people to sketch very rough concepts quickly. After a few minutes of sketching, people hand their sketches to the person beside them in a meeting and that person reviews the sketch and then adds new ones or variations on the old ones. Do 3-5 rounds of this and then have a session where you extact good ideas or good icons.
I've written a chapter on this and have done this many times for icons and even ideas for home pages for Web sites. The method is form of visual brainstorming and quite powerful. It is sometimes used to expose requirements. You need to reassure people strongly that artistic talent is not required. Send me a note offline and I"ll provide a few more details for you if this sounds interesting. It is also used as a tool to teach creavitity in children. If you google the method, you'll find some useful stuff, though it is hard to find a thorough discussion of the method.
