I've participated in polls on LiveJournal as part of social
networking. I don't think that they're one-way at all. After you
complete the poll, you are able to see the current results. Also, as
the polls are posted as part of a blog entry, everyone can comment
underneath and discuss the results. I've seen polls in LiveJournal,
EZboard, and just about every other place I log into online. I've
always thought that they were a usual feature of online social
networking.

Of course, my opinion is probably biased since LJ was the first social
networking I ever did, and I started my blog there when I was 17.
