Verified by Visa (and other similar schemes) are in no way limited to opening a new browser window. Actually I've never seen this in any website that I visited.
The official Visa website for merchants has got lots of information about the scheme and the best practice that they advocate is actually to integrate this as much as possible within your checkout flow, wrap it inside the standard elements of your site, and clearly explain to the user what it's all about. See: http://www.visaeurope.com/merchant/handlingvisapayments/cardnotpresent/verifiedbyvisa.jsp and http://www.visaeurope.com/documents/vbv/verifiedbyvisa_merchantdeploymentbestpractices.pdf I don't think it makes sense to collapse it any further (e.g. by adding an extra field to your standard checkout) - the point is that the bank can request whatever extra info they need, which may change from time to time, and that you get an extra sense of security by including the bank as a "participant" in the checkout process.
