I'm working on getting some IP lawyers who also have some connection with user interface or interaction design to submit proposals for UPA and CHI. This discussion brought up some good issues and there have been other issues regarding patents, copyright, trademarks, liability, fair use, licensing, and other topics. That would be a good place to discuss what can be discussed in a long forum.
I'll work working with some lawyers on a proposal in the next month (the IxDA conference would be a good place for a discussion but the short talk format would put pretty serious limitations given some of the discussions we've had occasionally.). I would be interested in specific issues that some IP lawyers could discuss. You can send them to me directly and I'll compile them and use them to help put together a proposal. I find that there are many misunderstandings in our field about legal concepts and with the IP wars heating up, it is worth have some good general background that relates to our design efforts. As some of you know I am married to a senior IP attorney (full disclosure here :-) who keeps me up to date on IP issues.
