I don't have the answer, but Malcolm McCullough's book _Abstracting Craft: The Practiced Digital Hand_ immediately comes to mind as a source that could shed some light on the subject. He doesn't use the phrase "resistance of the material" but he talks quite a bit about the constraints of the medium and other aspects of craft.
